When Imitation Isn't Flattering

Robert Scoble hits on a key difference between Microsoft and Apple. If Microsoft finds a technology they like, they generally buy it (Front Page and Visio being two of the more obvious examples). Front Page had something less than 1,000 sales when Microsoft purchased the company for over $100 million. They probably could have built a better product for less money, but a buyout is obviously quicker to market. If Apple finds a technology they like, they re-code it themselves, change the name, and extend their middle finger at the original developer (Watson and now Konfabulator being recent examples).
