Red Eye to Boston

I’m currently camped out in the Seattle airport preparing for an overnight flight to Boston for the Shareware Industry Conference, where I’ll be speaking on how to use video to reduce support costs. I’m excited to see many of the familiar faces I know from the shareware world, but since this is my first trip to the Boston area, I’m hoping some of you will have some suggestions for things to see or do while I’m in town. Fenway Park would have been near the top of my list, but with the Red Sox on the road I’m not sure that’s worth it. I’m considering making their Pawtucket, RI farm team one of my stops instead, having seen them play the Iowa Cubs a few times when I still lived in Des Moines. I will likely save the historical spots for a summer when we can take the kids, so I’m especially interested in anything that’s unique to Boston.

    Bunker Hill, Old North Church, Old Ironsides. Do drop in on Fenway.

    Just follow that green line all over. You can walk yourself to death there. It is a great place to visit…full of history.

    Christian Science Mother Church on Mass. Ave. The world room. There is a walkway that goes through the middle of a stained glass globe. The acoustics are wild.

    Boston Aquarium is excellent!! Plymouth Plantation is not too far our of town either.

    So, there are a couple of things I think you should do. First, although not exactly unique are the The Duck Tours. Right, I know, we have them here is Seattle as well. But it is a quick 2 hour orientation of the city. Then, Quincy Market and Fanueil Hall, hey, I know it’s historic, but you have to eat. Then The Sam Adams Brewery Tour, you are probably not going to want to do that when you have your children tagging along. Lastly, see if there is a Boston Pops concert this weekend.

    I would still recommend Fenway Park, they have a tour, which I have not taken, that I hear is very good.

    I would also recommend the Prudential Skywalk, on the 50th floor of the Prudential Tower, where I work, for a 360 degree view of Boston.. If you let me know when you are coming, I can arrange a free admission for you and some friends, and would love to meet you.

    Definitely head down to Pawtuckett for a Pawsox game! It’s a wonderful park, small, and not a bad seat to be found. A trip to Faneuil Hall is always fun and is close to the Aquarium.

    Duck Boat Tour. I lived in Massachusetts for 25 years before moving back to California in 1990. Took the duck boat tour in Boston 2 years ago. Definitely fun. If you are into museums, Isabella Stuart Gardner museum located in a uniquely beautiful building with a courtyard, musicians and wonderful artwork not available anywhere else. Unequivically, an only in Boston experience. If you go to Faneuil Hall, many wonderful eating places; try to get a lobster roll sandwich at lunch, expensive but worth it.
