3GP is most frequently associated with cell phones from a variety of companies. Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Nokia, Sharp, Sanyo, Panasonic and a host of other phone makers playback video in either 3GPP or 3GPP2 formats, neither of which is natively supported by any of the popular video editing apps like Windows Movie Maker, Premiere Elements etc. Both file formats are technically just variations of MPEG-4, but you need the right codec combination for your specific phone in order to create movies compatible with the phone, which can be a tricky proposition. If you're one of the several hundred thousand Sony PSP owners, you need an app to convert videos to a format compatible with your new device. 3GP Converter is the only free app currently creating both the MP4 video files and the .THM video thumbnail that displays in the PSP menu screen. 3GP Converter handles conversions for a wide range of phones, although you need some patience to make it work. The profiling system requires you to run a setup file each time your configure it to work with a new device (which shouldn't be often unless you own several different phones). QuickTime must be installed on your system to perform the MPEG-4 conversions. You also need to get past an initial screen in Japanese in order to configure the app to work in one of several language options. Whether you have cute home movies of your kids or programming from your favorite TV shows that you want to watch on the go, this is the app that will do the conversion for a wide cross section of portable devices.
