I'm on my seventh PDA since acquiring a Palm III several years ago. Two of those seven devices, including my current iPaq 4155, are Pocket PC devices. With each successive device, I feel compelled to find new ways to make the device useful in my everyday life. Contact management and appointments are a no-brainer, but what makes a PDA more than a glorified address book and game machine? One of my favorite uses for a PDA is as consumer electronics remote. The IR port included on every device makes this a simple programming feat for anyone with application development skills and it serves a highly useful purpose. High-end stereo systems ship with PDA-like remotes, containing confusing interfaces that leave the user baffled. NoviiRemote puts remote stereo and television control in the hands of anyone with a Palm or Pocket PC device. The application learns virtually any remote code, making it extremely universal. In many cases, the screen layout in NoviiRemote is more user-friendly than the proprietary hardware it replaces. Backlighting on the PDA means no more squinting in the dark to find the correct remote button (even the glow-in-the-dark variety is hard to see). Try out NoviiRemote with virtually any color or black and white Palm or Pocket PC device (mine isn't on the list, but seems to work). [ Pocket PC/Palm OS $24.99]
