NewsGator

NewsGator home on NewsGator.com

I've been so busy working on various projects, I haven't been checking my RSS feeds lately. Brian Livingston was in Des Moines for the Iowa Caucuses on Monday and tipped me off to the NewsGator 2.0 release. An insane list of bug fixes and feature enhancements makes this a must-update for current users, while giving those of you who haven't started using an RSS reader an excuse to try out NewsGator.

The big news for NewsGator is a new online service allowing you to check news feeds anywhere, while synching your reading in all locations to avoid duplication. If you aren't in front of the computer where Outlook is installed, your news is only a browser window away.

Within Outlook, stylesheets may be customized, the news page is greatly improved, searching on related terms now works, and the subscription process seems to work better (including support for password protected feeds). Improvements to the newsgroup reading capabilities are a bonus that leaves me wondering why I ever used Outlook Express for newsgroup reading.

One poorly documented feature is the inclusion of an open API (thanks again for the tip on this one Brian). NewsGator may now be extended through third-party development, if you ask for the information on how to do it. I have a feeling this particular improvement will be the one that makes NewsGator the solid leader in the establishment of standards for online news reading.
